"Warning: Propylhexedrine Medication May Cause Serious Harm"

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States has warned against the use or misuse of the drug Propylhexedrine, which is used as a decongestant and is available over the counter without a prescription, due to its potential to cause serious harm leading to hospitalization, disability, or death.

The FDA has stated that there have been several problems encountered after the misuse of drugs like Propylhexedrine, resulting in acute poisoning, including:

1. Irregular heartbeats.

2. High blood pressure.

3. Myocardial infarction (heart attack).

4. Increased body temperature.

5. Stroke.

6. Intestinal obstruction.

7. Pulmonary hypertension.

8. Seizures.

Toxic control centers in the United States have reported a significant increase in the abuse or misuse of drugs like Propylhexedrine in recent years, with 415 cases of drug use and 45 cases of misuse recorded.

Among these cases, 23 individuals experienced life-threatening symptoms, and 9 of them died.

The FDA suggests that most deaths were associated with the use of Propylhexedrine in combination with other substances.

The FDA has requested manufacturers of nasal decongestant inhalers containing Propylhexedrine to make design changes to ensure safe use.

These changes include incorporating a barrier within the device to make tampering and misuse of Propylhexedrine more difficult, or reducing the amount of the drug present in the device to minimize the risks of serious side effects in case of misuse.
