Ondansetron: Benefits and Risks

Before prescribing ondansetron as an antiemetic for pregnant women, it is important to know that:

3 out of 10,000 women who took it during the first trimester of pregnancy had infants with cleft palate!

It may be associated with a slight increase in the occurrence of cardiac septal defects!

At the same time, intractable vomiting may lead to depression, anxiety, malnutrition, and ultimately miscarriage!

Therefore, the benefits of controlling vomiting should be balanced against the risks, and the decision to prescribe it should be made accordingly!

It is worth noting that the FDA has not specifically approved it for the treatment of pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting!
